Lesson Style & Approach

I love working with students who are passionate about improvement.

I am fairly adaptable to students’ needs and tend to work well with most students. However, I prefer working with students who are at least 8 years old as they are usually more capable of thinking in abstract terms. I like providing an introductory lesson to see if there is a good fit, then decide on a lesson plan if things feel good.

When it comes to teaching, I approach lessons first as an artist, then as a musician. Based on personal experience, I’ve found students enjoy lessons more when they can appreciate the meaning behind the song rather than just focusing on rote repetition and memory. I think there is an artist in every musician, so I try to help students get in touch with that part of themselves through lessons.

Methodology

For beginners, I use Suzuki books and Essential Elements. For intermediate and advanced students, I go with what the student is interested in learning, using both Suzuki and technical books like Schradieck and Kreutzer to improve technique and skill. I have experience preparing students for music exams, like ABRSM and Certificate of Merit, as well as for school, youth orchestra, and musical auditions.

Pricing

I charge $30 for a 30-minute lesson, and $50 for a 45-minute lesson. My rate is based on factors including my years of musical experience, teaching experience, and market rate in the region. I add on a slight fee, typically $5, if I have to drive to the students’ home to teach.

“Everyone is an artist. Some just choose to accept the uniqueness inside of themselves more readily than others.” – Johan Qin

Testimonial

“Johan worked as a violin teacher at my music school from July 2021 to May 2022. He is honest, dependable, and incredibly hard-working. Beyond that, he is an impressive teacher and coach who was always able to keep our students interested, motivated, and looking forward to their next lessons with him. Johan is an absolute joy to work with.”
