Lesson Style & Approach

I am fairly adaptable to students’ needs and tend to work well with most students. However, I prefer taking on students who are at least 8 years old as they are more capable of thinking more abstractly. I usually provide an introductory lesson, then decide on a lesson plan if there is a good fit.

When it comes to teaching, I approach lessons as an artist, then as a musician. Based on experience, I’ve found students enjoy lessons more when they can feel the meaning behind the song rather than just focusing on technique and rote repetition. I think there is an artist in every musician, so I try to help students get in touch with that part of themselves through my lessons.

Methodology

For beginners, I use Suzuki books and Essential Elements. For intermediate and advanced students, I use a combination of Suzuki and technical books like Schradieck and Kreutzer to improve technique and skill. I have experience preparing students for music exams like ABRSM and Certificate of Merit, as well as for school, youth orchestra, and musical auditions.

Testimonial

“Johan worked as a violin teacher at my music school from July 2021 to May 2022. He is honest, dependable, and incredibly hard-working. Beyond that, he is an impressive teacher and coach who was always able to keep our students interested, motivated, and looking forward to their next lessons with him. Johan is an absolute joy to work with.”
