Violin Lessons Designed For You

Whether you’re learning violin for the first time or returning to the instrument later in life, I offer lessons tailored to meet you where you are. Continue scrolling to learn more about my teaching style.

Teaching Style

My approach is positive, encouraging, and deeply intuitive. I work to create a clear and focused environment where students can move beyond the mechanics of the violin to treat music as a living language. My style is interactive and energetic, designed to help you master not only the notes you are playing, but also to develop the ability to listen deeply and translate your feeling and ideas into a unique sound. Drawing from decades of understanding, I tailor my guidance to meet each student’s unique artistic style. I work best with passionate students over the age of 7 who are ready to find their voice and become the artist they were meant to be.

Lesson Structure

For beginner students, I draw from Essential Elements and the Suzuki method to establish a strong foundation in the basics of intonation, rhythm and sight-reading. As students continue to grow, I begin incorporating a mix of technical etudes and increasingly challenging repertoire to expand their skillset and develop their sense of style. Late intermediate to advanced-level students will focus on craft and musicality, deepening understanding of the language of music to truly allow their ‘inner musician’ to emerge. Over the years, my students have achieved high marks on musical examinations such as ABRSM, secured top prizes in competitions, and passed auditions for school and youth orchestra programs.

Testimonials

“Johan has taught our 8-year-old daughter so much. She already enjoyed playing violin before starting lessons with him, but she had very little experience with music theory or solfège before studying with Johan. He patiently taught her those fundamentals in a way she could really understand.

What stood out most to us was how specific and detailed his teaching is. He doesn’t just tell students to improve something — he explains exactly what needs work, why, and how to fix it. We could see noticeable progress after every lesson, both technically and musically. Her tone, posture, and overall playing improved dramatically after studying with him.

We have worked with several violin teachers over the years, and Johan made the biggest difference for our daughter. We only wish we had found him sooner. We’re very sad that we can no longer continue lessons with him because of our move.

Another thing our daughter loved was that Johan is also an excellent pianist and often played piano accompaniment during lessons. That made lessons much more enjoyable and motivating for her, and it’s something we haven’t experienced with other violin teachers before. We highly recommend him.” – Chinatsu F.

“Johan is an amazing violin teacher! Our 10-year-old started with him completely from scratch, and the progress has been incredible to watch. Johan has a great ability to connect with people, making the challenging early stages of learning the violin something our daughter genuinely looks forward to every week. He teaches excellent fundamentals, is always on-time and reliable, and keeps the lessons fun and encouraging. We highly recommend him as a music instructor!” – Farid J.

“Johan worked as a violin teacher at my music school from July 2021 to May 2022. He is honest, dependable, and incredibly hard-working. Beyond that, he is an impressive teacher and coach who was always able to keep our students interested, motivated, and looking forward to their next lessons with him. Johan is an absolute joy to work with.” – Sandy Coop, Director of the Bay Area Academy of Music
